The Block

Solid walnut and maple sideboard or console with hidden hardware.

Explore by Touch

Concept: Haptic Explorations
This minimalist project is both experimental and very functional. The key element of this project is actually what it is missing. There are no visible knobs or hardware that instruct the user on how to interact with it, nor the full scope of its interior usage. This was an object that required a haptic interaction to reveal information usually reserved for the eye.

With the elmination of external hardware, the cabinet doors are designed with a press-to-open operation. In this case, one must locate a correct corner to press, which requires an intentional physical exploration of the hand. The press-to-open latch, once engaged, pushes out to reveal a tactile handle for opening. The press-to-close also provides additional haptic feedback. Hidden behind the doors is a collection of shelves and drawers, which also contain no visible hardware, only material shapes and cues for interaction.
